Curran Consignment (#3): 1861-67 and 1869 Issues
Item # |
Description |
Price |
Picture |
c348 |
#64b (quite possibly #64 pink), fine, sound, tied by DEC 23 postmark (town
name unclear) on VF intact cover to Philadelphia. To the
right of the stamp someone has ink doodled a Washington portrait and
added several ink enhancements to design elements of the
stamp. Unusual. |
$75 |

#65, fine, sound, tied by a very unusual
manuscript "postmark" consisting of the town name, "Oil Mill Village
NH" along the left and top of the stamp
with a "May 16 1862" date on the stamp. This is a scarce
Hillsboro County DPO, 1847-1894 (R5 scarcity). The cover is a
small, intact lady's cover, embossed back flap, with some corner
and edge wear. Quite a different manuscript cancellation! |

|
c310 |
#65, F-VF, single short perf at right, otherwise
sound, canceled by a superb SOTN strike of unusual elongated
rectangular geometric killer (Skinner-Eno GE-S 11, mistakenly
attributed to "Clarendon Falls") with XF strike of CLARENDON
SPRINGS VT. postmark (DPO Rutland County 1837-1901) with
manuscript Oct 26 date on VF fresh cover, very small
reduction at right. Contains original letter datelined Oct 25, no
year date. A very eye catching item. |

c307 |
#65, fine, small perf faults at top, bearing an XF
strike of "OK" fancy killer (Skinner-Eno LC-OK 5), not tied,
with double ring SARATOGA SPRINGS N.Y. AUG 13 postmark on
F-VF cover, 1cm reduction at left. |

#65, fine, sound, grid cancel, FITCHBURGH Mass. AUG 26
postmark (Worcester County, 1811-) on cover (very small reduction at
left) to Louisville, KY. The cover bears a large blue LOUISVILLE
ADVERTISED, SEP 7 postmark along with a blue 7-bar grid killer.
(The application of this grid killer on advertised covers appears to
be a practice of the Louisville post office. Based upon
examination of other covers, this may have been duplexed to the
ADVERTISED postmark.) A faulty cover with CHICAGO ILL OCT 4 1864
postmark and second example of the combined LOUISVILLE ADVERTISED
postmark and grid accompanies this lot. The Fitchburgh cover along
with a similar item previously offered in the Curran Consignment is
the subject of an article by Roger in the
Fall 1995 USCC NEWS ("A
Versatile Louisville Grid", p. 32) discussing the grid marking. |

#65, fine, sound, just tied by a VF strike of small
negative numeral "3" in circle and octagon (Skinner-Eno
GE-H 10), VF FORT PLAIN N.Y. APR 14 (1863) postmark
(Montgomery County 1821-), on VF, fresh and intact cover to
Cooperstown, NY. Cover contains original printed and dated bank form
Fort Plain Bank. A very scarce and unusual numeral fancy killer
from this era on a pretty cover. |

c224 |
#65, VF, sound, tied by a gem strike of "U.
S. SHIP" in double ring postmark with fleuron on small cover to
Poolville, Madison Co., NY. Cover has a 2mm reduction at left
affecting nothing and a few minor tone spots. A very nice example of
this difficult marking. |
$175$150 |

c204 |
#63, two fine sound copies, tied by two VF strikes
of BLUE framed "PAID" killers on VF intact small drop cover,
light red BOSTON MASS, DEC 12 double ring postmark. The killers are
the 22½x8½ mm variety (Bake and Davis 632). Strikes in any color
other than black ink of this otherwise common BOSTON PAID killer are
exceedingly rare. (January 1852 U.S.
Cancellation Club quarterly article by Wilbur W. Davis, co-author of
the Boston Postmarks book, regarding the framed PAID killer.)
Cover has a 2020 APS certificate of authenticity opining that the 1¢
stamps are darker bright blue, not "dark blue". A wonderful
exhibition quality item for the collector of Boston postal markings
or the 1¢ 1861 issue stamp. |

#65, fine, sound, tied by an XF strike of negative
anchor fancy killer (Skinner-Eno PO-An 21, Whitfield 725) with
matching COOPERSTOWN, N.Y., AUG 15, '65 double ring postmark on
VF,
fresh and intact cover locally addressed with original content. I
could locate only a single other on-cover example of this handsome
killer on the PF or in auction. Clearly a scarce item. |

c189 |
#63, #73, fine copies, each canceled by manuscript "SX",
on mourning cover with manuscript Essex, VT, Oct 5 postmark. The
stamp cancellations are a wonderful phonetic abbreviation of the
town name. This cover was pictured and discussed in the February
2005 edition of the USCC NEWS. The cancel is reported in The Postal
History of Vermont by George C. Slawson, et al. The mourning cover
is intact with the upper right corner barely clipped. An exceptional
example of a purposeful manuscript cancel and a very interesting
mourning cover. |

#94, VF, sound, tied by an XF strike of rare
right-flying blue bird fancy killer and matching blue ROCKFORD,
ILL., MAR 31 postmark on cover to Garrattsville, Otsego Co., NY.
Cover is docketed "Aug 29, 1869" (probably an answer date), is
neatly opened, barely trimmed at right, and contains original dated
letter (no year). There are three reported varieties of "blue bird"
killers from Rockford. The earliest and most common (albeit still
quite scarce) is the left-flying, used from NOV-DEC 1867. Another,
known on a single reported cover (offered as item 1520 in R. A.
Siegel Auction #1063) has a left-facing bird inverted to the
postmark on a 3¢ 1869. (The PF has certified a single off cover
example of this on another 3¢ 1869.) The offered cover is one of
only two reported (the other being on a 3¢ 1861 entire postmarked
APR 1) bearing the right-flying killer. The PF has certified
just three examples off cover of this, all on different values of
1869 issue stamps. This is a terrific, rare, and highly
exhibitable cover, indeed. |

#65, F-VF, sound, bearing a VF-XF SOTN strike of a
1¢ coin (reverse) killer with XF strike of WILKINSONVILLE, MASS.,
JUL 3 postmark (Worcester County, 1827-) on VF intact cover
addressed to Oliver C. Bullard, Office U.S. Sanitary Commission,
Baltimore, Md. This coin killer is identical to the one used in
Milford, Indiana (Skinner-Eno PO-Co 4). Research revealed
only two other Wilkinsonville coin covers, neither with the
desirable combination of sound attractive stamp, terrific killer
strike and bold postmark, all on a VF complete envelope. (These
include one PF certified and another auctioned by Siegel in 2015 for
$375 plus commission.) The addressee dates this cover to 1863. From
April to October 1863 Bullard was in charge of provision of special
relief services to soldiers and their relatives, including the
collection of back pay and bounties due to them from the government,
gathering information on soldiers for their relations, procuring
transportation to hospitals and military departments, and for
soldiers' furloughs and transfers. An absolutely wonderful
example of a rare fancy killer. |

#114, fine, fresh, sound, tied by red grid cork
killer and blue DEERFIELD, MA postmark on VF unreduced small
cover. A beautiful and very scarce combination of color
cancellations on a single stamp and cover. |
